Sinds we terug zijn, maar eerlijk gezegd ook al vóór vertrek, krijgen we deze vraag constant: “Hoe doen jullie dat met twee kleine kinderen?”
Uitspraken als “wauw, wat stoer” of juist “mij niet gezien” vlogen ons om de oren. En heel eerlijk? In onze ogen is het een van de leukste dingen die er is: samen als gezin op reis gaan.
We proberen vooral niet te veel beren op de weg te zien en gewoon te doen. Natuurlijk is reizen met kinderen anders dan reizen zonder kinderen. Na mijn studententijd ben ik een half jaar gaan backpacken: geen plan, geen boekingen, alleen een globale route. Met een backpack liepen we een dorp in, op zoek naar een slaapplek. Dat is nu wel even anders.
Meer voorbereiding, maar nog steeds vrijheid
Tegenwoordig lees ik me vooraf goed in en stel ik een reisroute samen waarvan ik denk dat die leuk is voor zowel ons als de kinderen. Ik boek alle accommodaties van tevoren, maar wel altijd met gratis annuleren. Zo houden we toch nog wat vrijheid en kunnen we onderweg het schema aanpassen als dat beter voelt.
Betekent dit dat we alles tot in de puntjes regelen? Zeker niet. Tijdens onze reis naar Panama en Costa Rica hadden we het vervoer bijvoorbeeld maar deels vastgelegd. In Costa Rica huurden we een auto, maar in Panama regelden we alles ter plekke: taxi’s, shuttles, boottochtjes en noem maar op.
Zo staken we de grens over van Panama naar Costa Rica in een shuttle waar we als sardientjes in een blik zaten, tussen backpackers met torenhoge backpacks. Daarna liepen we te voet de grens over, iets wat de jongens nog nooit hadden gedaan en wat ze extra bijzonder vonden. Nou ja, Luke dan; Ted zat gewoon lekker in de draagzak.
Reizen met alleen handbagage (ja, echt)
Iets wat onze reizen met kinderen enorm makkelijk maakt: we reizen al jaren met alleen handbagage. Ik hoor je denken: “Hoe dan? Met kinderen?”
Natuurlijk heb je extra spullen nodig, zoals luiers en billendoekjes. Maar ook in het buitenland wonen baby’s. Luiers zijn vrijwel overal te krijgen. We nemen er altijd een paar mee en kopen de rest ter plekke.
Daarnaast kun je op veel plekken wassen. Soms boek ik een Airbnb met wasmachine, soms laten we de was doen in het hotel. Ik pak kleding in voor ongeveer een week (iets meer voor de kinderen, want hun kleding is klein en ze worden vaak sneller vies). Zo blijft alles overzichtelijk en licht.
Luke heeft een klein rugtasje met zijn naam erop. Dat mag hij zelf vullen met speelgoed of een kleurboekje. Er past niet veel in, dus hij moet keuzes maken. En eerlijk: meestal vinden ze ter plekke genoeg om mee te spelen. Schelpen, steentjes, een stok… En tegenwoordig hebben ze vooral elkaar. Dubbel vermaak.
Buggy’s, autostoelen en slimme keuzes
Voor Ted mogen we nog een buggy meenemen. We hebben bewust gekozen voor een compacte buggy die mee het vliegtuig in mag. Dat scheelt enorm: we kunnen hem tot aan de deur van het vliegtuig gebruiken en hebben hem meteen weer bij aankomst. Geen wachten bij de bagageband; dat is echt goud.
Ook een autostoel mag mee. Deze keer hebben we dat niet gedaan om het sjouwen te besparen en huurden we er eentje bij de autoverhuurder. Vorig jaar naar Bali namen we wel onze Maxi-Cosi Nomad mee, omdat we veel taxi’s zouden gebruiken. Die kun je heel klein opvouwen, en zo heb je altijd een veilige stoel bij je.
Van koffieplantages tot walvissen
Het ritme (of: het loslaten daarvan)
Als je thuis een heel strak slaapschema aanhoudt, kan reizen best uitdagend zijn. Elke dag ziet er anders uit en je bent niet altijd in de buurt van een bedje. Wij proberen het ritme tijdens het reizen los te laten. Thuis kijken we ook vooral naar signalen in plaats van naar de klok. Op reis is dat nog losser. Soms valt een planning anders uit, soms duurt een lunch eindeloos, soms is het een lange reisdag.
In de auto valt Ted bijna altijd in slaap, ongeacht hoe laat het is. Soms kiezen we er bewust voor om hem rustig in het hotel te laten slapen, zeker na drukke dagen. En hij sliep ook regelmatig in de draagzak, bijvoorbeeld tijdens hikes.
Een tip die we zelf soms gebruiken: een klein babytentje, zodat je ook op het strand altijd een fijn bedje bij je hebt.
Activiteiten afgestemd op de kinderen
We keken tijdens deze reis vooral naar waar de jongens blij van werden. Ted vindt alles nog prima, maar Luke heeft inmiddels een duidelijke mening. Hij wilde, net als Freek Vonk, zo veel mogelijk dieren zien in Costa Rica. Met zijn verrekijker, die hij voor kerst had gekregen, ging hij elke dag op pad.
Hikes door de jungle, natuurparken en het Jaguar Rescue Center waren absolute hoogtepunten voor hem. Net als de hike bij de Arenal-vulkaan, die hoog op Luke’s wensenlijst stond. Gelukkig vinden wij dit zelf ook fantastisch.
Zelf wilde ik graag het water op, maar dat vond ik vooraf best spannend met twee jonge kinderen. Daarom kozen we eerst bewust voor een privéboot, zodat we altijd konden aangeven wanneer het genoeg was. Dat werkte perfect.
Na een boottocht bij de eilanden Bocas del Toro, die de jongens geweldig vonden, durfden we meer. In Uvita boekten we een walvistour: drie uur op open zee, zwemmen en walvissen spotten. We stonden oog in oog met een gigantische bultrug. Een onvergetelijke ervaring. En Luke zwom met mij in open zee, zó stoer.
Gewoon doen (en genieten)
Zoals je leest, zien wij weinig beren op de weg. We nemen de kinderen overal mee naartoe en genieten van hun grote ogen en nieuwsgierigheid. Soms zijn er dagen dat niets lukt (of dat ze het lokale eten weigeren) en soms verloopt alles soepel. Maar eerlijk: thuis gaat dat toch net zo?
Reizen met kinderen vraagt aanpassingsvermogen. Je kind bepaalt het tempo en jij mag meebewegen en genieten van alles wat je samen meemaakt. Voor ons is dat het meer dan waard.
