Nadia vond tien jaar geleden haar grote liefde Mika en samen kregen ze dochter Dahlia (6). Twee jaar na Dahlia’s geboorte raakte Nadia opnieuw zwanger, dit keer van een jongetje. Een NIPT-test gooide alles om. Het kindje bleek meerdere beperkingen te hebben. “Ik moest de moeilijkste beslissing uit mijn leven nemen,” vertelt ze. Met twintig weken moest ze bevallen van haar doodgeboren zoon. De babyshower was al geweest. De toekomst al ingekleurd.
Toch gaf het stel niet op. Een nieuwe zwangerschap bleef uit en Nadia belandde in de medische molen. Wat volgde was een traject van vier jaar, met behandelingen in België, Duitsland, Spanje en zelfs Albanië. Eicelpuncties, hormooninjecties, wachten, hopen… en vaak weer slecht nieuws. Soms kreeg ze tijdens haar werk te horen dat er wéér geen embryo was overgebleven. “Ik hield mezelf groot, maar vanbinnen brak ik.”
“Maar je hebt toch al een kind?”
Er was ook een hoop onbegrip. Collega’s die (vast goedbedoeld) zeiden dat ze toch al een gezonde dochter had. Of dat niet genoeg was. “Dat deed pijn,” vertelt Nadia. Afgelopen zomer leek er alsnog een wonder te gebeuren: Nadia was zwanger. Maar na acht weken stopte het hartje met kloppen. Dat moment voelde als een grens. Ze besloot te stoppen met het traject. Definitief.
Nu probeert ze rust te vinden. “De verwerking begint pas als je stopt,” zegt ze. En ergens is er ook opluchting. “Dat ik weer kan genieten van een glas wijn, mijn gezin en nieuwe projecten op werkgebied.”
