Tien jaar geleden voelde alles anders. Instagramfilters waren heftiger, gender reveal parties nét een ding en babynamen waren vooral lief en niet te gek. In 2016 kozen we massaal voor namen die toen modern en tijdloos tegelijk voelden. Maar anno nu zie je ze steeds minder op geboortekaartjes.
De meisjesnamen toen niet konden negeren
Sophie
Jarenlang dé nummer één. Zacht, klassiek en overal. Juist die enorme populariteit werkt nu tegen haar: veel ouders willen geen naam die al te bekend voelt.
Julia
Elegant en internationaal. In 2016 een favoriet, nu minder dominant doordat ouders vaker kiezen voor kortere, stoerdere of Scandinavisch klinkende namen.
Emma
Altijd goed, altijd mooi. Maar ook: jarenlang top 3. Inmiddels schuift Emma iets naar achteren omdat ouders op zoek zijn naar iets anders.
Anna
Tijdloos en klassiek. In 2015 enorm geliefd, nu verplaatst ze naar de achtergrond.
Tess
Kort, lief en jarenlang populair. Nu kijken ouders verder.
De jongensnamen die overal waren
Sem
Dé jongensnaam van tien jaar geleden. Stoer en lief tegelijk. Juist doordat Sem zo lang populair bleef, kiezen ouders nu vaker voor iets minder voor de hand liggends.
Daan
Jarenlang een vaste waarde. Inmiddels wat weggezakt, vooral omdat ouders vaker kiezen voor internationalere varianten.
Lucas
Klassiek met een moderne twist. In 2014 een hit, nu minder dominant doordat de trend verschuift naar korter en zachter.
Finn
Nog steeds populair, maar niet meer zo allesoverheersend als tien jaar geleden. Finn blijft, maar deelt het podium nu met nieuwe namen.
Milan
Internationaal, stoer en jarenlang geliefd. Inmiddels iets minder vaak gekozen doordat ouders vaker kiezen voor Scandinavische invloeden.
Waarom deze namen terrein verliezen
De grote gemene deler? Overzichtelijkheid. Tien jaar terug zochten ouders vooral naar namen die herkenbaar waren, makkelijk uit te spreken en veilig voelden. Namen waarbij je geen uitleg hoefde te geven en die meteen klopten. Nu verschuift dat. Ouders willen nog steeds iets toegankelijk, maar wel met een twist. Korte, zachte klanken doen het goed, net als Scandinavische of internationale vibes. Het verklaart waarom sommige namen langzaam uit beeld verdwijnen en andere juist aan een stille opmars bezig zijn. Babynamen bewegen nu eenmaal mee met de tijd en die tijd klinkt ineens net even anders.

Zijn deze namen nu ‘uit’?
Nee hoor. Ze zijn gewoon even uit de spotlight. Net als flared jeans en midden-scheidingen. Alles komt terug, alleen niet tegelijk. Neem maar van ons aan: over tien jaar voelt Sophie ineens weer verrassend fris tussen alle Liva’s en Noor’s.
