Charlotte werkt als Intensive Care Kinderverpleegkundige in het Sophia Kinderziekenhuis en staat daar middenin. Wat ze daar ziet, draagt ze met zich mee. Daarom komt ze in actie en fietst ze samen met 2000 collega’s om geld op te halen voor innovatie en onderzoek.
Achter de deuren van de kinder-IC
Charlotte werkt als Intensive Care Kinderverpleegkundige, waar ze zorgen voor kinderen die ernstig ziek zijn en intensieve bewaking en behandeling nodig hebben. “Dat kunnen baby’s zijn die net geboren zijn, maar ook oudere kinderen tot 18 jaar.”
Op de kinder-IC kan alles in een paar tellen omslaan. “Mijn werk bestaat uit het continu monitoren van vitale functies zoals ademhaling, hartslag en bloeddruk. Ik dien medicatie toe en ondersteun de ademhaling bij kinderen die bijvoorbeeld geïntubeerd zijn. Kinderen liggen op de IC omdat ze intensieve zorg nodig hebben en hun situatie kan in korte tijd omslaan. Dan moet je scherp zijn, klinisch kunnen redeneren en snel handelen.”

Maar het draait niet alleen om monitoren en medicatie. “Ouders zijn vaak 24/7 aanwezig. Je zorgt niet alleen voor het kind, maar ook voor het hele gezin, in een periode die onzeker en emotioneel is.”
Het went nooit
Dit is niet zomaar een baan, het vraagt emotioneel veel. “Soms merk ik aan mezelf dat het op werk goed gaat, tot ik thuis kom en aan mijn vriend vertel hoe mijn dag was. Dan realiseer ik vaak pas wat het op emotioneel gebied met me doet. Je probeert professioneel te blijven, maar ik ben ook mens.”
Jaarlijks overlijden ongeveer 1400 kinderen rondom de geboorte. Dat is geen getal op papier, maar iets wat zij van dichtbij meemaakt. “Je leert ermee omgaan, maar het blijft heftig en het blijft verdrietig. Het raakt mij elke keer opnieuw, juist omdat het vaak gaat om hele jonge kinderen die nog maar net begonnen zijn aan hun leven.”
Wat extra onderzoek kan betekenen
Juist daarom is innovatie en onderzoek zo belangrijk. “In de zorg voor kinderen lopen we nog vaak tegen grenzen aan. Sommige behandelingen zijn nog niet optimaal of bestaan simpelweg nog niet, terwijl ze bij volwassenen soms al wel beschikbaar zijn. Extra onderzoek helpt om complicaties sneller te herkennen, behandelingen te verbeteren en de gevolgen op lange termijn na een IC-opname te beperken. Soms kunnen kleine verbeteringen al een enorm verschil maken voor de toekomst van een kind.”

Fietsen voor Sophia
Toen kwam Fietsen voor Sophia in beeld. “Ik ben in november begonnen met spinnen, eigenlijk doordat een collega me spontaan meenam naar een Taylor Swift-thema uurtje. Als echte Swiftie kon ik dat natuurlijk niet weigeren! Sindsdien is fietsen iets wat we als collega’s vaker samen doen: het verbindt en is een fijne manier om werk los te laten.”
Op 6, 7 en 8 maart 2026 stapt ze samen met meer dan 2.000 deelnemers op de fiets tijdens Fietsen voor Sophia, de grootste spinningmarathon van Nederland voor het Sophia Kinderziekenhuis. Drie dagen lang wordt er gefietst om zoveel mogelijk geld op te halen voor innovatie en onderzoek. “Omdat ik een bereik heb op TikTok en Instagram voelde het voor mij logisch om dat in te zetten om zoveel mogelijk donaties op te halen. Het is super bijzonder om dit samen met collega’s van het Sophia te doen. Ik hoop dat we met deze actie echt kunnen bijdragen aan innovatie en onderzoek, zodat we in de toekomst nog meer kinderen kunnen helpen.”
