Leven met type 1 diabetes – meer dan je denkt

Tijdens mijn eerste zwangerschap kreeg ik te horen dat ik zwangerschapsdiabetes had. Iets wat je wel eens hoort, maar waarvan je hoopt dat het aan je voorbijgaat. Totdat je zelf in die stoel zit.

Ineens gingen mijn dagen over bloedsuikers meten, letten op voeding, spanning bij controles en de zorg of alles goed zou blijven gaan met mijn baby. Gelukkig verliep alles uiteindelijk goed. Maar die periode gaf mij wél een inkijkje in hoe groot de impact van diabetes kan zijn op je dagelijks leven.

En dat was “maar” tijdelijk.

Nu, zes jaar later, werk ik samen met Joris en Sanne van Breakthrough T1D Nederland. Zij zetten zich met hart en ziel in voor mensen met diabetes type 1. Samen willen we niet alleen aandacht vragen voor type 1, maar voor iedereen die te maken heeft met type 1 diabetes . Want diabetes type 1 raakt meer mensen dan we vaak beseffen.

Hoe is het om te leven met type 1 diabetes?

We weten inmiddels dat type 1 diabetes veel meer is dan alleen “een beetje opletten met suiker”.

Het is:

Altijd vooruitdenken
Altijd plannen
Altijd meten
Altijd verantwoordelijkheid dragen
Voor een zwangere vrouw.
Voor een moeder.
Voor een vader.
Voor een kind.

Maar hoe voelt dat écht?

Hoe is het om als mama zelf diabetes te hebben?
Hoe is het om zwanger te zijn met diabetes type 1?
Hoe is het om een kindje te hebben dat dagelijks afhankelijk is van insuline?
Hoe ga je om met zorgen, school, sport, verjaardagen, vakanties?

Samen met Breakthrough T1D Nederland willen we andere gezinnen een eerlijk inkijkje geven in het leven met diabetes.

We zijn op zoek naar:

Mama’s die zelf diabetes hebben (type 1 of tijdens zwangerschap)
Ouders van een kindje met diabetes
Zwangere vrouwen met diabetes
Wil jij jouw ervaring delen?
Wat betekent diabetes in jouw dagelijks leven?
Wat heeft het je geleerd? Waar loop je tegenaan? Wat geeft je kracht?

Door verhalen te delen, maken we diabetes zichtbaarder. Eerlijker. Menselijker. En hopelijk ook minder eenzaam.
